Commission: Juri Arisugawa Wig by Antiquity-Dreams Commission: Juri Arisugawa Wig by Antiquity-Dreams
Oh. My. God. This. Wig.

This has, by far, been one of my biggest challenges to date. The commissioner sent me a wig she had been working on which, thank god, it was a beautiful beautiful base from Epic Wig. I wont lie, they sell some of the nicest wigs ever (they're just typically too expensive for me to buy from). Also, props to the commissioner for even attempting this challenging of a wig so bravely. Seriously, fearless.

So I clean up the wig which was a little difficult because gel can be a huge pain in the ass to get out of wigs once it's in there. But, being that this is an epic wig and the commissioner sent me the wig before she got very far, it all came out pretty well for the most part. There was just some bumpiness I couldn't seem to heat wash out of the top of the wig.

Anyway! Then I set to work on the curls.

Now... I started with the typical Big Drill Wig tutorials which include: tape, glue, wire and half your soul.

This only sort of worked.

Actually... it mostly didn't work at all because the curls kept coming undone and the look was rough at best. Not something I could be proud of even a little. About 5 curls in (and this took me weeks to do) I decided that I HAD to do something else because this just wasn't working and there was no way I could hand over a commission looking like this.

So, I went boldly in another direction; one in which I had gleaned from a blurry scan of a magazine page about princess curls. Obviously, I promised the Cosplay Gods a pint of blood if it meant that this wouldn't ruin the wig. What did I do? I used clear, fast drying, calking silicone. Seriously... imagine my trepidation.

If this had been MY wig? No worries. But this was a NICE wig from a Commissioner which meant... NO room for fatal errors.

To my surprise, it worked beautifully.

And then to my great sorrow, I realized I had to brush out the other five curls that had taken me weeks to do.

I did it and cried the whole time. On the up side, the silicone process took less time to do and I managed to get two or three curls a day done.

And in the end... this is the finished project. Please enjoy it. Please?

This. Is. Flawless. Absolutely flawless. You have managed to get this wig closer to the character than anyone I have ever seen. You have skills! Sometimes risks pay off, sometimes they don't. In this project though, it worked absolutely and utterly perfectly!

hiya, i LOVE what you've done with this wig! would you be willing to share a bit of insight into how you shaped the curls? i plan on styling a wig for rose quartz from steven universe, and i'd love to incorporate the seamless look of silicone curls into at least part of it. so, did you just coat sections of hair, wrap them around something, and wait for them to dry? or was there some heating/cooling involved, or wire, or something to keep the silicone from sticking to your curl forms?

i completely understand if you want to keep the specifics to yourself- you do sell this stuff, after all. either way, great job on this and thank you for sharing the idea!

This wig is shockingly accurate and just gorgeous. I've never seen a better Juri wig. I'm honestly now spoiled by knowing it exists because I will have to try and conquer this wig one day when I cosplay Juri. Amazing work - truly!

It's a little bit of a nightmare to create but totally worth all the tears and mess. I just... really really really really love the Utena series and I desperately wanted to do Juri some serious justice with her wig. I'm glad you appreciate it as well ^^!

Wow, it looks fantastic  What do you mean with silicone? Did you put silicone on the curls?

I have a lovely Juri costume I never wore because I could never style a wig correctly (and I can't dye my own hair orange for career reasons). The costume has sat in my closet complete for years. This wig is beautiful, truly, you have done a smashup job. This really is a challenge!

I'm glad, this is not an easy task, and you did it so very well. You should be very proud! The owner of that wig is very lucky.

Jeeeeeez. See, I mostly buy my wigs from Arda-wigs.com and their most expensive is like... 60 for a lacefront? Something like that. They're high quality wigs for pretty cheap and they're designed by cosplayers for cosplayers. I will promote them till the ends of the earth XD

Omg, I can completely sympathize with the pains of curling a wig; I had to do it for my Rarity wig and I very nearly had a mental breakdown and there was an episode of sobbing; this is actually a lot of really useful information; which I'm totally going to utilize in future wig curling.

Lol Now I know exactly how to curl Rarity XDDD! I actually had the thought while I was doing the wig that this would be perfect for her.

Yeah, you definitely learn a lot through the first event that is curling a wig; especially since there are just sooooo many methods to curling a wig; it's almost overwhelming to research it at first. But these curls are totally and utterly perfect for Rarity ^^
