A lot of people though, when making the argument against Gypsy not being a racial slur in American Society and therefore ok to use because American society doesn't "understand it"... don't realize that, while yes it's less a slur in our society, the image it invokes is one of thieves, black magick users, fortune tellers, care free, nomadic, bohmeme travelers, etc; stereotypes that have done a particularly good job of over-sexualizing and exoticizing a vast array of cultures beneath the tag and erasing their own cultures, traditions, and ancestries, etc, as well as erasing the very real struggles they still face today. It's just as harmful as the prevelant stereotype of the Native American Indians that is so far from the truth and does the same to the cultures under the Indian tag.
The word traveler, imo, invokes much the same imagery without doing the same thing "Gypsy" does
The term 'gypsy' in America ironically is a more positive sterotype than its original intention, of which most people aren't aware of, so it really has become a colloquialism instead of a sterotype. At any rate, I'll consider changing the title to nomad so as not to offend any fellow traveler
I'm not exactly sure where to post the link.. So I chose to do it on the actual photo, sooo: [link]
