Not sure why I never bothered to upload any of these pictures. Probably because I'm skittish about uploading original design outfits like this?

Anyway. This is an original outfit I made for Renaissance fair lol. I dance (a little) and do other entertaining things for two different guilds that I float back and forth between.

I made the whole thing in a few hours, got the coin bra from a random seller in Egypt but it looked like tin when I got it so I had to age the metal and coins. The under bra has been refitted with lace and the skirt comes in several tiers. The base of it is black and white with veils and various metal belts on top. My favorite part is actually the tassel belt here. You can't really see the detail work on it in this picture but it makes me super super happy lol.

And that's Naru next to me. Being the cutest pirate wench of all time XDDD <3

Hooray for racial slurs....

I considered being politically correct by changing gypsy to Roma or Sinti, more so for myself because my family is nomadic and the slur can be irritating at times. However, it belatedly occurred to me that, in American society, the slur is less about being untouchable and more about being a colloquialism... because said society doesn't even understand the slang. So, considering the society I currently reside in, I went with a term they'd understand and gave up nitpicking over petty details. So, yes, I get where you're coming from and it's nice to see someone who is educated on the topic as well.

Ngl, your response to my comment made me very happy, as someone of Rromani decent <3 Thank you for this.

A lot of people though, when making the argument against Gypsy not being a racial slur in American Society and therefore ok to use because American society doesn't "understand it"... don't realize that, while yes it's less a slur in our society, the image it invokes is one of thieves, black magick users, fortune tellers, care free, nomadic, bohmeme travelers, etc; stereotypes that have done a particularly good job of over-sexualizing and exoticizing a vast array of cultures beneath the tag and erasing their own cultures, traditions, and ancestries, etc, as well as erasing the very real struggles they still face today. It's just as harmful as the prevelant stereotype of the Native American Indians that is so far from the truth and does the same to the cultures under the Indian tag.

The word traveler, imo, invokes much the same imagery without doing the same thing "Gypsy" does :)

Hmmm I can get behind that and I totally understand your point, though a great deal of the negative sterotype is much more alive in europe than it is in Us today. I think you're completely correct when you say Americans sexualize the phrase and don't see the current and past struggles of the Roma and Sinti because of the exotic nature of the Roma. I don't think most Americans are even aware of who the Sinti are or how the can look just as white and blonde as any other german, so there is a lot of culture blindness happening.

The term 'gypsy' in America ironically is a more positive sterotype than its original intention, of which most people aren't aware of, so it really has become a colloquialism instead of a sterotype. At any rate, I'll consider changing the title to nomad so as not to offend any fellow traveler ;)

:) you make all good points, I will not dispute that :) And thank you, so much for your kindness on the subject. Very rarely are we ever actually faced with such understanding n the subject, nor someone so educated on it as yourself. <3 May you forever be successful in all your ventures.
