The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

Naru and I were in the grocery store and she pointed out the V-day decorations around the credit card machine. Our conversation went as follows:

Naru: "Hey look! There are even valentines decorations around the credit card machine!"
Me: "You know what I hate about valentines day?"
Naru: "The fact that it's a Halmark(c) invented holiday aimed at making a profit off of a substantial human emotion?"
Me: "... and that's why I married you. I love you."
Naru: "I love you too baby." *chu*

It's moments like these that really cement the fact that I made the right choice <3

haha this is so funny b/c my mate and I were sitting around with some friends and they asked what we had planned this year for vday. We both looked at each other and shrugged cuz we dont really care.
Mate: (smirking) My darling dearest will be happy to explain in so many words why we dont celebrate.
Me: Vday was originally meant to honor all the martyred saints with the last name "valentine". Then it was changed to celebrate a priest named valentine who was killed by a roman emperor for marrying roman soldiers when the emperor had outlawed it, stating a married man doesnt make a good soldier. I refuse to take one day out of the year to celebrate 'love' when it should be everyday.
Mate: (snickering at this point) that and she had to deal 3 years doing floral arrangements for couples when she was single.
Me: Unfortunately they fired me when I started telling customers its sad they have only one day when i have 365
